At Eye Care for Animals we are committed to effectively managing and minimizing the pain your pet may experience following surgery. Effectively managing pain, we believe, not only keeps your pet more comfortable but also helps your pet recover more quickly.
Safe for use in both dogs and cats, the Fentanyl Patch is particularly useful for minimizing pain associated with surgery. Fentanyl, a potent pain relief drug is slowly released from the patch and absorbed through the skin. A single Fentanyl Patch significantly relieves pain for up to four days.
To offer the greatest degree of pain relief we apply the patch 12 to 24 hours prior to certain surgical procedures when possible so that an effective blood level of fentanyl is reached prior to the actual surgery.
How Do We Apply The Patch?
To apply a patch we clip the fur, place the patch on the skin and cover it with a bandage to ensure that it stays in place. Please watch your pet carefully after we have applied a Fentanyl Patch; make sure he or she does not scratch or chew (and possibly swallow) the patch. Also, take precautions to prevent children from pulling off the patch.
Are There Any Side Effects From The Patch?
Few side effects have been noted in relation to the use of a Fentanyl Patch in dogs and cats. However, if you notice vomiting, significant lethargy, overly quiet behavior, excessive vocalization or restlessness or an unexpected decrease in or lack of appetite, please call us at Eye Care for Animals and speak with one of our staff members.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Fentanyl Patch, please call us at Eye Care for Animals. We want to ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible for you and your pet after surgery.
When Do I Remove The Patch?
The patch may generally be removed on the fourth day after application. Remove the patch and protective bandage gently as it may cause some discomfort to your pet, much like removing a band-aid. It is important to contact only the edge of the patch and to use gloves to avoid skin exposure to the medication. The patch should be folded on itself once, placed in a plastic bag and returned to Eye Care for Animals for disposal.
